Description
Situated in a small bay near the south coast of Islay, Lagavulin stands near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle.
Lagavulin legitimately claims to being one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Distilling on the site is thought to date from as early as 1742.
In the late 1700s it is believed that there were up to ten illicit stills operating in the district.
By the 1830s only two distilleries remained in the bay. In 1837 these distilleries amalgamated to form Lagavulin.
The 16 year old Lagavulin has become a benchmark Islay dram from the Lagavulin distillery.

Distillery: Lagavulin
Isle of Islay, Scotland
Sat between Ardbeg and Laphroaig on the south coast of Islay, Lagavulin has a history of disagreements and lawsuits. Founded in 1816, a year after Laphroaig, it has been in fierce competition with its nearest neighbour ever since.
Lagavulin Distillery is thought to be one of the longest established distilleries in the country.

Tasting Notes
Nose: One of the smokiest noses from Islay, it's big and very concentrated and redolent of iodine. Also there are sweet spices, good mature sherry and creamy vanilla.
Palate: Very thick and rich. Malt and sherry heavily feature with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Overall Big, powerful with peat and oak.
Finish: Long and spicy finish. Figs, dates, peat smoke and vanilla all last well into the long and spice filled finish.
