During the 16th century, the wines from Cognac and Champagne regions in France were highly appreciated by Northern European countries. To preserve the wines during transportation, the Dutch began distilling them. The resulting spirit was called “brandwijn” which meant burnt wine, later becoming known as “brandy”. During the 18th century, today’s famous Cognac houses were born, with Martell in 1715 and Rémy Martin in 1724. Louis XIII Cognac has been for decades eponymous of luxury, refinement, and rarity.
Typical style: Hundreds of different eaux-de-vie are carefully blended together to create a unique and perfectly balanced spirit. The flavour profile of a Cognac depends largely on its age statement and the house style, but they are usually regarded as fruity, complex and sweet.
Did you know? Only brandy produced from grapes grown in the French region of Cognac and made to specific guidelines which adhere to the appellation d’origine contrôllée (AOC) can display the name Cognac on its label.
