Description

History making infamous Blend.

Cardhu were the first distillery to use the term "pure malt" to describe a blended malt.

This was something done for marketing reasons, making customers believe the whisky was not a blend.

Due to this misinformation, the term "pure malt" was banned from being used to describe a blended scotch whisky.

Cardhu is the Speyside home of Johnnie Walker, and the distillery contributes much of its production to the world famous blend.

So much so in fact that the distillery bottling was changed to a vatted "pure malt" for a brief period in 2002 to ease pressure on its stock, but quickly reverted back to a single malt in 2004 following widespread criticism

The incident saw the rewriting of the rulebook for single malt whisky, and the birth of the term "blended malt," adding some infamy to the Cardhu history books in the process.

This bottle is from that infamous 'pure malt' phase and is an interesting piece of whisky history.

Please note as this is a vintage whisky, conditions of bottle/label and liquid level can vary.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Pears with a hint of sweetness from candied fruits and brown sugar as a little bit of pepper makes things interesting.

Palate: Light hints of dried fruits are easily noticed with leather and more pepper.

Finish: Faintest hint of cocoa before yet more peppery spice.
