Following in the footsteps of Michters, Willett and others, West Virginia’s Smooth Ambler Spirits built a cult following by sourcing some of the tastiest whiskey on the planet.
Appropriately called “Old Scout”, the bottles could be counted on for their quality, and they have taken home some prestigious awards.
Made with bourbon mashbills - one is aged in virgin oak barrels, while the other is aged in re-charred bourbon casks.
While this unique aging excuses the marriage from being called bourbon, it shares all of the character and drinkability you would expect from a Kentucky Bourbon.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Those flavors also create a creamy mouthfeel, followed by caramel, vanilla, honey, corn, and grain husk.
Palate: Vanilla, wood, and peanut butter smoothly transition into the aftertaste, not surprising given the taste. Once those sweet flavours dissipate, peppermint lingers and just a little bread grain.
Finish: Sweet and smooth, with notes of butterscotch and cherry pipe tobacco, it is exceptionally drinkable for 99 proof.
