The origins of Gin can be traced back to the 17th century in Holland, where Franciscus Sylvius started to use juniper-based distilled spirits called “Genever” for medical purposes. Nowadays Gin is made from a neutral flavoured spirit that is distilled and must contain Juniper berries as its main ingredient to be classed as “Gin”. The flavours we can appreciate in a gin come from different botanicals that can be added to the distillation process or infused into the base spirit.
Typical style: Traditional gins tend to present a juniper-forward flavour profile, with slight citrus notes, but newer styles tend to focus more on other botanicals like herbs, fruits, and spices.
